How do you know if honey is real?

What is real honey?

Real honey is a natural food product that bees produce from nectar found in nature. In Sweden, honey comes from flowering plants, trees, and herbs from which bees collect nectar during the season. The nectar is converted by the bees into honey and stored in honeycombs in the hive.

At Villa Blomstergren, our honey comes directly from our Swedish apiaries in southern Sweden. We extract the honey gently and jar it without altering its natural properties.

How do you know if honey is real?

For an average consumer, it can be very difficult to determine whether honey is real or not. Honey fraud has become a growing problem internationally, and some products sold as honey may be diluted with sugar solutions or syrup.

The most sophisticated frauds are so difficult to detect that in many cases laboratory tests and DNA analyses are required to expose them.

This means that honey can look, smell, and taste like honey – but still not be real.

The difference between Swedish honey and imported honey

Swedish honey is produced in small-scale apiaries where bees collect nectar from Swedish plants. It is handled gently and often bottled directly by the beekeeper.

Imported honey, on the other hand, can pass through many hands and be blended from various countries of origin. In several international tests and analyses, it has been discovered that a large portion of the imported honey on the market does not meet the requirements for real honey.

That is why many consumers today choose Swedish honey from local beekeepers.

Natural honey from our Swedish apiaries

At Villa Blomstergren, we practice beekeeping in southern Sweden and produce honey from our own apiaries. Our bees collect nectar from Swedish blooms such as rapeseed, summer flowers, and forest flowers.

The result is natural honey with a genuine taste, straight from the hive.

Research and reviews regarding honey fraud

In recent years, several investigations and media reviews have highlighted that honey fraud occurs internationally. Analyses using modern laboratory methods, including DNA tests, have in some cases shown that imported honey can be diluted or not meet the requirements for what can be sold as real honey.

Several Swedish and European reports have therefore scrutinized the honey market and how one can identify real honey through advanced analyses.
